If you’ve spent any time wandering the scorched landscape near the Ash Heap and the Cranberry Bog, you already know the Burn Zone can feel like a giant maze wrapped in radiation and bad decisions. But tucked between collapsed structures, scorched earth, and mutated wildlife are some of the coolest hidden holotapes in the game. These little recordings add personality to the world, offer hints about past events, and sometimes even lead you toward interesting loot spots. After a bunch of runs through the area, I’ve picked up a few reliable tricks to make hunting them down a lot easier.

Below is a full guide based on actual in-game experience, not just a list of coordinates. Think of it like advice you’d get from a fellow player on a Discord voice call: practical, beginner-friendly, and not too serious.

Understanding How Holotapes Are Placed in the Burn Zone

The Burn Zone isn’t just a place where everything is on fire; it’s a zone with oddly structured encounter pockets. Holotapes usually appear in areas where people would realistically have left them behind: makeshift camps, abandoned mining gear, control outposts, or the remains of research teams that were clearly having a very bad day.

A lot of the holotapes here blend in with the environment because everything is covered in soot. This is where patience comes in. Move slowly and check surfaces you wouldn’t normally pay attention to, like the tops of overturned lockers or the inside corners of collapsed tents.

Start Near the Edges Before Heading Deeper

When I first explored the Burn Zone, I used to rush straight toward the center, thinking that’s where the good stuff had to be. But after dying too many times to random flamers and high-level critters, I learned that starting along the edges is not only safer but smarter.

The outskirts often have abandoned field kits and supply racks. These spots sometimes spawn miscellaneous collectibles, so if you’re farming Fallout 76 items, you may accidentally stumble onto a holotape or two while checking containers. I’ve found several tapes tucked inside metal supply boxes or left on top of dusty crates that didn’t look interactable at first glance.

Bring the Right Gear and Keep an Eye on Durability

The Burn Zone punishes players who show up unprepared. Even with power armor, lingering too long in certain hot pockets will chew through your durability. To make sure you get enough time to thoroughly search the area, bring a stack of repair kits or at least a decent backup armor set.

Weapon durability matters too. You’ll be fighting plenty of enemies while trying to explore, so having a stable loadout helps you stay focused on holotape hunting instead of scrambling for ammo. If you ever find yourself running low on essentials and you’re playing on PC, some players pick up gear from marketplace sources, and I’ve heard a few folks mention Fallout 76 items for sale PC options when they want to speed up gearing. Personally, I prefer looting in the wild, but it’s something people talk about in the community.

Just make sure you can survive long enough to comb through every ruined corner, because the best holotapes tend to be placed in the most inconvenient spots.

Know the Most Common Spawn Patterns

Holotape spawn points in this region fall into three general categories:

  • Worker AreasThe Burn Zone used to be filled with miners and machinery operators, so it’s common to find work logs or personal messages near drills, conveyor belts, or abandoned tool stations. If you see a set of lockers leaning against half-collapsed scaffolding, always check inside, even if they look empty at first.
  • Research OutpostsThese outposts are a goldmine for story-driven tapes. Usually, the holotapes are placed near terminals or broken science gear. Look for makeshift tents with glowing screens or scorched lab tables. The tricky part is that many outposts blend into the environment, so follow exposed power cables leading into ruined shelters.
  • Emergency CampsThese are easy to miss because they often look like regular debris piles. Anything with bedrolls or cooking pots has a chance to hide a personal recording. Some tapes are dropped on the ground beside improvised fireplaces, and they’re extremely easy to step right over.

Once you recognize these patterns, your search time cuts down dramatically.

The High-Risk Spots That Hide the Best Recordings

Some holotapes spawn in areas crawling with enemies like Scorched or even the occasional legendary variant. These places are annoying to search but absolutely worth the trouble.

One of my favorite examples is a ruined monitoring platform that sits on top of a ridge overlooking the main Burn Zone. Getting up there is a bit of a climb, and you’ll probably run into a group of aggressive mobs. But once the area is clear, you can check the nook behind the remaining railing. I once found a holotape resting on a piece of scrap metal that looked like part of the floor. It blended in so well that I only noticed it because the UI highlight flickered for half a second.

Use Audio Cues and Keep Your Volume On

This may sound silly, but audio helps more than you’d expect. Holotapes themselves don’t make noise, but nearby enemies and environmental effects do. If an area is eerily quiet, it’s often a sign that you’re close to a story-related location. Many of my best finds happened in the quiet pockets right after clearing enemies.

Player Tips That Make the Search Easier

Here are a few small but game-changing habits:

  • Jump onto everything. Many tapes spawn on slightly elevated surfaces. If you can climb it, check it.
  • Use a flashlight aggressively. Holotapes blend in with ash. The slight shine from the beam makes them pop.
  • Return after events. Some Burn Zone events shuffle small objects, and occasionally a holotape spawns where there wasn’t one before.
  • If you’re grinding resources anyway, pick up errands along the way. I sometimes restock at vendors like U4GM between exploration loops, just to make each trip less stressful.
